Welcome to James Asher Visuals

James Asher has been creating groundbreaking instrumental music for over 45 years. With best-selling albums like Feet in the Soil and Shaman Drums, and releases on labels including Music West, Silverwave, New World, and New Earth, his work has reached global audiences. His music has also powered film, TV, and media through library giants like Bruton (Universal), KPM, Dewolfe, and Studio G—where his Abstracts project was later sampled by The Chemical Brothers, Unkle, and Tyler, The Creator on the Grammy-winning album Call Me If You Get Lost.

That same spirit of innovation fuels Asher’s visual art. What started as designing album covers grew into a full creative practice, powered by the immediacy of iPhone photography and the limitless possibilities of modern editing tools. His images span portraits, architecture, landscapes, and pure abstraction—always seeking the unique, the unexpected, and the bold.

All my artwork is available to purchase as downloadable high resolution files.

The Creative Flow Behind My Images

Creating images from photographs and expanding them through digital tools is a process I find both stimulating and fascinating. Coming from a background in music, I notice strong parallels in how creativity flows. Playing in a band, for example, involves listening and responding in real time — rhythmically, melodically, and collectively. That magic of jamming — listening, absorbing, reacting, and playing — translates directly into the way I approach visual art.

When working with images, there’s also a sense of call and response. Unpredictability, surprise, and even randomness often shape the outcome, which is why flexibility is essential. Many times, the final piece looks very different from the original photo. If the starting image has strong balance and composition, it can carry through even when pushed in bold, unexpected directions.

The possibilities are vast — from delicate impressionism to surreal flights of imagination. That limitless range is a large part of what first drew me in. The results can be sensuous and aesthetically pleasing, or intriguingly disconcerting when exploring the physically impossible.

What matters to me is the immediate emotional impact an image creates. I try to amplify that spark, whether it inspires beauty, curiosity, or even confusion that lingers in thought.

This openness lets me move freely across genres without inhibition — just as in galleries, where I’m most inspired when different categories of art blend together. I love when landscapes meet abstraction, when boundaries dissolve, and new meanings emerge.

Maybe that’s my Gemini Moon craving variety, balanced by my Virgo Sun pushing me to refine the details! Either way, it keeps me engaged, curious, and energized. I’ve found that absorbing a wide spectrum of imagery not only prevents boredom but also deepens my appreciation of each distinct style.

As technology continues to evolve, so do the creative tools at our disposal. The pace of innovation makes it impossible to predict what’s next, but one thing is certain — the possibilities will only become more staggering.

This collection marks the starting point of my journey here. Each piece has resonated with me personally, sparking inspiration and joy. My hope is that they may do the same for you.
